Saturday Scrapbooking

I'm a day late with my Friday post, but life has been crazy busy lately. I've been trying to get our year end review website done and its a big task. But lets get right to the new scrapbooking layouts.

Britt teamed up with Molly from DeCrow Designs to create an amazing Christmas kit. I love the vintage feel to it. Here is what I created:

A Gift from Santa - I've tried to scrap these photos several times, but finally got them scrapped and love how it turned out. I love this set of photos of me going to see Santa.

Photobucket

Dear Santa - I love these photos of Cassie. She's such a naughty girl, but so cute!!! The top photo was used on our Christmas cards in 2006.

Photobucket

This week Britt also released a set of brushes called, "Funky Stems" that I used for this layout:

Christmas Joy - I used them as a clipping mask then added some flair to the two. Photo is me when I was little.

Photobucket

And since I was a bad blogger, I didn't post last week's layouts. Last week Britt released a super cool pack of templates inspired by fellow Britt girl, Ashley.

Here are my layouts using the templates.

Bear Country - Melinda and I at Boyds Bear Country in Gettysburg, PA. I love this store. Its 4 stories of bears! They are so cute, but expensive. If you love bears and our out East, you should go to Boyds Bear Country. It is worth the trip!

Photobucket

Center of Attention - These are some of my favorite photos from our 2005 trip to Chicago. I love the one of the polar bear looking at Melinda. He or She was so cute! They were putting on a good show for the people.

Photobucket

That's all I have time for right now. Melinda and I have to go pick up the cake for Pat's birthday, which is today. Not quite sure what time he's coming up. I think we're going to Uno's for dinner.

Gotta go! Later!

Remembering the Mighty Fitz

Photobucket

On Monday, November 10, 1975 the "Mighty Fitz" S. S. Edmund Fitzgerald mysteriously sank without sending any distress signals, in Canadian waters approximately 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay. All 29 members of the crew perished. It was launched on June 8, 1958 and until the 1970's was the largest ship on the Great Lakes.

On Sunday, November 9, 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald left Superior, Wisconsin in route to a steel mill near Detroit on Zug Island. Captain Ernest M. McSorley captained the Edmund Fitzgerald. They were joined by a second freighter, Arthur M. Anderson, which was headed for Gary Indiana. Since the Fitzgerald was faster, it took the lead. While crossing Lake Superior the boats run into a nasty winter storm. Winds were in excess of 50 knots with waves as high as 35 feet. Due to the storm, the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie were closed so the boats turned northward to seek shelter along the Canadian coast hoping to make it to Whitefish Bay.

Late in the afternoon on Monday, November 10, 1975 the Anderson was struck with a 75-knot hurricane like gust. At 3:30 pm, the Fitzgerald radioed the Anderson to say they had developed a minor list and had sustained some top-side damage, which included the radar. The heavy snow made it impossible to see. All ships were warned by the Coast Guard to find safe harbor, but the Fitzgerald was running blind. The lighthouse and radio beacon at Whitefish Point had been knocked out. The Fitzgerald slowed so that the Anderson could get in range to provide them with radar guidance.

The Anderson was able to direct the Fitzgerald for a time. At 5:45 PM Captain McSorley radioed another ship, Avafors, to report that they had lost their radar, had suffered a bad list, and the seas were washing over the decks. The last communication came at 7:10 PM when the Anderson radioed the Fitzgerald of being hit by rogue waves that were big enough to be captured on radar. The rogue waves were heading towards the Fitzgerald. Captain McSorley reported that they were holding their own, but a few minutes later the Mighty Fitz sank. Ten minutes later the Anderson was unable to find the Fitzgerald by radio or radar. They informed the Coast Guard of their concern for the Fitzgerald at 8:32 PM. They then began to look for survivors. The weather made the search difficult. A second freighter, the SS William Clay Ford, joined the Anderson in the search. The Coast Guard launched three aircraft, but the weather prevented them from launching any ships. The search recovered no survivors.

The day after the Fitzgerald sank, the Mariners' Church in Detroit rang the bell 29 times for each life lost. The church continues to hold a memorial each November 10, reading the names of the victims and ringing the church bell 29 times. Every November 10 the Split Rock Lighthouse in Silver Bay, Minnesota emits a light in honor of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The wreckage was discovered by a Navy aircraft using an on-board magnetic anomaly detector that was normally used to find submarines. The wreckage was further surveyed by the Coast Guard using sonar on November 14-16, 1975. Since the wreckage was found there has been quite a bit of controversy over how the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. When it initially vanished it was believed that it broke apart on the surface then sank, but the wreckage did not support this theory. The Coast Guard decided that it sunk due to ineffective hatch closures that had been unable to keep the waves from filling the cargo hold. The flooding had probably been going on for most of the day until it finally lost buoyancy and then plummeted to the bottom. An alternative theory is that the loss of the radar forced the crew to use inaccurate charts that resulted in them briefly either running aground or scraping a shoal near Caribou Island. This bottom damage caused the Fitzgerald to gradually take on water into she sank so suddenly in the deep water that none of the crew had time to react. A documentary by the Discovery Channel blames the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald on rogue waves that were reported to the Fitzgerald by the Anderson.

The bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald was recovered on July 4, 1995. It is now a part of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point near Paradise, MI. The anchor that had been lost on a previous trip was recovered and can be found on display at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit, MI. Other artifacts like lifeboat #2 that was shredded like paper can be found at the Steamship Valley Camp in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Gordon Lightfoot immortalized the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald in song in 1976. I listen to this song every November 10th.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the "Gales of November" came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well seasoned,
concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
when they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
and a wave broke over the railing.
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'twas the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
when the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
in the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin'.
"Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya."
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said,
"Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
and the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight
came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
in the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral."
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee."
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
when the gales of November come early!"

The Edmund Fitzgerald may be the latest and largest ship lost, but sadly it is not alone at the bottom of the lake. The Great Lakes have a long and sad history of nautical disasters. Since 1878 there have been nearly 6,0000 shipwrecks on the Great Lakes and 25% of those have been total losses. There have been several ships and crews that vanished without a tracwe in storms.

So on this day that remember the Edmund Fitzgerald the 29 men lost aboard her, we should remember the other souls that have been lost in nautical disasters on the Great Lakes.

Let's go wild!

Melinda and I went to see Madagascar 2 this afternoon. It was AWESOME!!! We both thought it was better than the first. There were parts where we couldn't stop laughing. I love the penguins, lemurs, and monkeys. Won't post anything too specific, but the scenes with the penguins were soooooo funny!!! Lots of adult humor. I highly recommend it! Two thumbs way up!

The Everyday Magic challenge at ScrapMatters that started last week was to scrap the last movie, we saw so I had to do one about Madagascar 2.

Photobucket

I totally enjoyed the episode of the Amazing Race tonight! So happy that Kelly and Christy were elinimated. Their inability to read the clues is what got them eliminated and was a problem since the first episode. I loved the sewing machine guy. He was hilarious! I loved the greeter as well. That was funny when Phil had to call him over.

After that Melinda and I watched more "Reaper." The first season came out on DVD last week so we've been watching that lately. I can't wait for the second season to start.

That's all for tonight!

Friday Scrapbooking Update

Ugh! I've been so bad at posting lately. I have lots of new layouts to post. :) Scroll down for scrapping updates.

To start off with, last Friday was so depressing. Almost no one at work dressed up for Halloween. On the way home I think I saw only a dozen houses with lights one. I only saw a few trick-or-treaters. It was sad because when I was a kid almost all the houses had lights on and there were tons of kids out trick-or-treaters. My sister said the only people who stopped at our house was a group from a hayride. It didn't make much sense. In the past there have been more than that. And to add to the mystery and sadness of it all was that it was a beautiful night. It wasn't cold, raining, snowy, or windy.

On Tuesday, Melinda and I went to go vote. We normally go in the morning and are almost always the youngest people there. There seemed to be a good turnout, which was good to see. I love going to go vote! I remember my 18th birthday so clearly because I was so excited to go to the Secretary of State after school to register to vote. And am proud to say that I have voted in every election since. Its important to use our right to vote. A lot of people struggled for a long time to give me that right. I was happy that Dave Camp won re-election! YAY! Congratulations to Obama and Biden. I'm happy that the election is finally over. It seems that each Presidential campaign gets longer and longer.

Looking on the "Bright Side"

Britt is amazing! She just got back from Disneyland and created a brand new kit that is out of this world fabulous!!! It's called "The Bright Side" and full of bright, bold, vibrant, beautiful colors. Definitely one of my favorites.

Here is what I scrapped with it:

Photobucket

Time of my life - This was for the Everyday Magic #2 challenge at ScrapMatters. The task was to photograph the clocks in your house.

Photobucket

No real plans for this weekend. I'm hoping to get a bit of scrapping done. Especially since I keep hearing that evil "S" word in the weather forecast - snow. YUCK! It's too early for that. So it seems to be a good weekend to stay home and scrap.

Cyndi at ScrapMatters is hosting this week's daytime Speed Scrap:

Photobucket

Check out the participation prize by Britt:

Photobucket

I am definitely going to try to be there! The participation prize is just gorgeous!

That's all for now.

Weekend Update

This past week has been a long one! On Monday I didn't feel good and spent most of the week under the weather. Still not 100% better, but definitely feel better than I did. I hate being sick. It always seems to take longer to get better than it does to get sick.

Since I felt so awful most of the week I needed something to cheer me up so I finally purchased a new digital camera. I've had my Kodak CX7430 camera since February 2005. It still takes beautiful photos, but it was time to get a newer one.
I decided on the Canon PowerShot A590 IS.

Photobucket

I'm so exited!!! Its still a point and shoot camera, but it has tons of really awesome features. It has gotten lots of good reviews. So far I've been really pleased with it. I can't wait to take it to Florida. I need to familarize myself with it before we go.

On Saturday Melinda and I took Mom and Dad to Frankenmuth for their 35th Anniversary. Pat met us at Zehenders. We thought since it was Sweetest Day that if we went early when they opened it wouldn't be too busy. Pat got there before we did and got a table. It was a ZOO!!! TONS and TONS of people. There was almost no parking. The food was good though. I had the Chicken Prima Vera. Melinda, Mom, and Dad all had one of the world famous chicken dinners. Pat had Chicken Parm, which he said was good. After lunch we went downstairs to the bakery and bought some baked goods. Since it had been a while since my parents had been to Frankenmuth we took them to Bronner's. It was crazy, but not as bad as November or December. We were there probably 2 hours. I had to pry Melinda away from the lighted village houses. They had some cute Disney pieces. We each bought some ornanments. Melinda and I got an advent calendar with chocolate in them like when we were younger. LOL We got a really cute Red Wings ornament. I took a bunch of pictures inside that I will try to upload when I get a chance.

Today I hung out with Pat a bit before he went back to his house near Detroit. I always enjoy spending time with him. I probably won't see him again until next month when he will come up for his birthday and Thanksgiving.

Melinda and I had an unexpected visitor today. It was our best friend growing up that I haven't seen in probably 4 years. I was totally shocked. It was nice to see her again. Even though we lost touch I still would often think of her and wonder what she was doing.

I enjoyed tonight's episode of the Amazing Race. I loved that they finally got to go to New Zealand. I loved Phil's dad as the greeter.

Since I was sick most of last week I still didn't finish reading "Son of a Witch" yet, but I did purchase "A Lion Among Men." Hopefully I can finish SOAW tomorrow, but I need to get some scrapping done. Ugh. Being sick just really messed up last week.

I'm just hoping that this will be a better week. That's all for now.

"Glam"orous new layouts

I love Fridays! I love being able to post the layouts I've been working on for Britt's new products. Today Britt has the perfect product if you want to add some glitter and glam to your products:

Photobucket

And she also released "Bunches of Flowers" which had previously been a Speed Scrap participation prize. It's 25 gorgeous flowers in various shades.

Here are the layouts I scrapped with these products

Someone is sleeping in my bed - Cassie loves to burrow under the blankets on my bed. She, however, doesn't like to be disturbed when she does.

Photobucket

Incredible - Melinda and I with Mr. and Mrs. Incredible at Walt Disney World in January 2007. This time Mr. Incredible behaved himself! LOL In 2005 she was flirting and hitting on all the ladies. In front of Mrs. Incredible!!! I made the logo with the glitter paper and the Incredibles font.

Photobucket

Say Goodbye - This was the last photo we had taken at Disneyland. It was as we were leaving Disneyland. It's always so sad to leave Disney.

Photobucket

Last night was a super fun speed scrap at ScrapMatters. Here is the layout I created:

My Pal - The photos are me with Mickey at Walt Disney World in 2007 and Disneyland in 2008.

Photobucket

No exciting plans for this weekend. I need to take some photos for a "day in the life of me" layout for a challenge at ScrapMatters. Our local library is having a used book sale, so I may go check that out. See if I can find anything good.

Speaking of books . . .

Photobucket

A Lion Among Men by Gregory Maguire is the third book in the Wicked years. It comes out on TUESDAY!!!! I can't wait!!! I'm rereading Son of Witch right now to refresh my memory. I need to finish it by Tuesday.

That's all for now! I should go read! :)

Layouts and some exciting news!!!

At the DISboards I hosted a "telephone" challenge. It was so much fun watching the layout change from person to person. Here is the layout I created:

A Trip to Wonderland

Photobucket

I created this layout for the weekly challenge this week at the DISboards that Britt hosted.

Once Upon a Dream - Cinderella Castle from our January 2007 trip.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The other day the Travel Channel DVD, Paranormal Destinations, that Melinda ordered arrived and the episode about Salem inspired the next layout.

In Memory - This is the Salem Village Witchcraft Victim's Memorial in Danvers, MA. Danvers was once known as Salem Village, but has spent the past 300 years distancing themselves from the Witch trial hysteria and it definitely shows because you don't see many traces of it at all. In 1992 they built this memorial for the victims. Its on a small little quiet street in almost the middle of nowhere. It is beautiful. The day we went my sister and I were the only people around. The text around the edge is the words from the victims. It may look like something is misspelled, but there was no standard spelling in the 17th century so they are spelled as they were back then.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I will have more layouts to post on Friday. :)

Now for the news . . . WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!!! Melinda and I are taking Mom to WDW in January and meeting up with Aunt Joyce and Aunt Nette. YAY! Its a little over 3 months until we go. We will be staying at Pop Century again! I love Pop Century. I can't wait!!! We have reservations for breakfast at Akershus in Norway on Melinda's birthday.

Ok, that's all for now. :)
